General Information

Express Children’s Theatre is Houston’s oldest and largest performing and arts education organization dedicated specifically to children and families. We are celebrating our 20th year of creating and presenting professional, culturally diverse performing arts designed to entertain and educate.

Our 2011-2012 Season, Inspiring the Imagination includes a wonderful array of innovative programs that reflect the rich cultural diversity of Houston. With stories that excite the imagination and raise the spirit, these adaptations of classic tales bring our favorite fictional characters to life in outstanding theatre for children and those who are children at heart. Created and performed by Houston’s finest theatre artists, this season also includes a popular story of perseverance and personal triumph as well as captivating storytelling performances for smaller audiences.

Express Theatre was founded in 1991 with two shows, four actors and a shoestring budget. Since that time, we have been the proud recipient of two Austin Circle of Drama Awards, three B. Iden Payne awards for children’s theatre, a cover story in Stage Directions magazine and we were chosen to participate in a historic exchange program with Beijing Children’s Art Theatre. This season we will present over 300 performances in venues all over Southeast Texas. Express has already touched more than 2 million young lives.

Express offers weekly performances at it’s 90 seat theatre in Northwest Mall (located between Hempstead Highway and 18th Street, just off 610 Loop in Northwest Houston). Our Touring Series brings the magic and excitement of quality theater directly to children in their schools and communities. We also present performances at Houston Community College’s Heinen Theatre, the Children's Museum of Houston and free performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre, numerous Public Libraries and Community Centers.

Learning through the arts is of unique educational value. It allows students the freedom to learn, explore and discover themselves and the world around them. The goal of our programs is to enhance teamwork, self confidence, communication skills, and physical movement. Classes emphasize creative thinking and offer a positive means of self expression.

Express Theatre Education Program (ETEP) provides several programs for the individual student at our Theatre Home in Northwest Mall. Saturday Theatre Workshops, held each week, allow students to participate in a variety of theatre games and activities such as Pantomime, Stage Movement, Improvisation and Dramatic Interpretation.

ETEP also assists schools in implementing an art based curriculum that contributes to the growth and development of students: raising self-esteem, fostering communication and collaboration, nurturing deductive reasoning and enhancing problem solving skills. Programs include: Theatre Workshops where individual schools select from a variety of programs structured around six-week cycles; Theatre From the "Core" - an innovative 18 week Theatre Arts Education Program designed to enhance the teaching of core-curriculum academic subjects for 3rd through 8th Grade students and; Artist Residencies that can be tailored for long or short term projects.
